What is story grooming?

User stories define what the product will be, what features it will have, and how these features will work. The problem is that, initially, these user stories may not be properly defined or only defined at a high level. Some may even not be defined at all.

This makes it difficult to start development on these user stories. We know all about it. We’ve done project management for over 20 years and delivered over 150 projects. If these stories are not properly defined, including them in sprints becomes problematic, which makes overall development more difficult.

To get these stories ready for development, we use story grooming. Before you get going on story grooming, there are some things you need to know. Let’s take a look.

What Do You Need to Know About Story Grooming in Agile?

Story grooming is when the product owner, alone or with the team, reviews the backlog to ensure that it only contains relevant items and that is organized in the most optimized way. This ensures that the items at the top of the backlog are ready for delivery. Story grooming is, because of negative connotations to the word grooming, increasingly referred to as backlog refinement.

For backlog refinement to be effective, it has to take place regularly. It can even be scheduled to take place at regular intervals. By doing this regularly, the team ensures that the backlog contains only detailed items that are properly defined and duly estimated in their order of priority. During these sessions, the team will:

  • remove user stories that are no longer relevant.
  • remove user stories that are no longer relevant.
  • remove user stories that are no longer relevant.
  • remove user stories that are no longer relevant.
  • remove user stories that are no longer relevant.
  • remove user stories that are no longer relevant.

Keep in mind, though, that some of these steps may not take place every time. The product owner or team will use them as and when needed. This is in line with the dynamic nature of backlog refinement.

By properly implementing backlog refinement, you’ll be sure that your project is as streamlined and efficient as possible. For more information on backlog refinement or properly implenting it, contact us. We can give more information or help you implement backlog refinement the right way.
